Created by engineer Gabi Ferraté – a Barcelona-born, globally-based engineer and music nerd working at BMAT Music Innovators – this music Royalties Calculator brings transparency to how much any artist earns through digital music streaming today.
As well as allowing fans to easily explore how much their favourite artists earn, the calculator aims to empower artists themselves to check their pay matches with their plays. Artists can check their estimated music royalties and see if all the dots in their royalty stream are connected i.e that this matches up with what they’re pocketing.
“The calculator shows fans and artists how much they are earning from digital streaming.”
If what they pocket from streaming doesn’t match up, it could be that they could benefit from uploading their music to BMAT’s database. As Gabi puts it “There are improvements to be made regarding the sharing of accurate data across the music industry as a whole. Transparency is key.” Making sure artists get what they deserve has always been at the centre of global tech leaders BMAT’s mission – to facilitate seamless data operations across all music industry players. Now they’ve helped to launch this calculator which shows fans and artists how much they are earning from digital streaming.
The use of streaming services has risen over the bumpy last 18 months, along with what Gabi thinks is a new perspective for fans. “It seems the pandemic times have brought a growing awareness that there’s a whole background of financial structures, people, and companies that go beyond the music we love to listen to. Fans are becoming more interested in that.”
“There are improvements to be made regarding the sharing of accurate data across the music industry as a whole. Transparency is key.”
There’s still more to come from this project. Gabi’s working on adding radio and TV data from BMAT’s vast database to improve the tool. He’s also “developing a chart exhibiting the most looked up artists as well as delving into some cross-data results like aggregating countries or genres and contrasting them.” We’ll be keeping an eye out.
